Anesthesiology Legislative Events
On Jan. 11, the Mississippi Society of Anesthesiologists reserved space at the Mississippi State Capitol’s first-floor rotunda for physician anesthesiologists to gather with their colleagues from all across the state and discuss issues specific to anesthesiology with state legislators. Several UMMC anesthesiology faculty and residents attended, including Dr. Claude Brunson, Dr. Latoya Mason-Bolden and Dr. Jim Rabalais.
Doctors from across the state have the unique opportunity to serve as the designated “Doc of the Day” at the capitol. Recently, two of our attending physicians were able to serve in this capacity.
Dr. Sara Robertson, one of our pediatric anesthesiologists, and Dr. Latoya Mason-Bolden, one of our obstetric anesthesiologists, served as Legislative Doctors of the Day at the capitol Jan. 22 and Feb. 2, respectively. In that capacity, Dr. Robertson and Dr. Bolden were available to provide emergency medical treatment to lawmakers and critical staff.
Dr. Brunson and Dr. Mason-Bolden were among a handful of anesthesiologists invited to attend a reception honoring Dr. Jerome Adams, our nation's 20th surgeon general. Dr. Adams is the first anesthesiologist to serve our nation in this role. The event was in Washington, DC at the Fairmont Hotel on the evening of Jan. 13.
